Basting to hold things in place so you don't have to use a frame.

It is pretty easy to quilt a smaller quilt with no frames. If you are going to do a larger quilt, twin or bigger, then you may find it easier to have a frame.
Carolyn uses 2x4's, thumbtacks and chairs. Ask her about it.
This Picture shows the sample basted and marked.
Mark your quilt using a template as a guide. I am using the chalk in this example.

Make sure you place your stencil/template where you want it before marking.
The basting goes outward from the center removing the pins as you come to them so they don't create bumps in your backing fabric.
When you get to the the outer edges and have already gone out from the center many times then you can start basting across the lines going in many directions to make sure things stay in place well.
